The day after discharge

Most treatment programs are built around a window: 30 days, 60 days, sometimes 90. Inside that window there is structure, routine and people checking in. Then discharge happens, and the structure disappears overnight.

For a lot of people, that is the hardest part. Not the detox, not the program. It is the ordinary Tuesday afternoon three weeks later with nowhere to be and no one expecting a call.

A plan for the days after doesn't have to be complicated. A standing meeting. One person you can text. Something on the calendar every week that has nothing to do with drinking. The point is to have somewhere the structure continues.

If you're leaving a program soon, or someone you love is, it's worth writing that plan down before the last day rather than after.
