What to do with a sober milestone
Milestones in recovery can land oddly. A date arrives and people expect you to feel triumphant, and instead you feel tired, or exposed, or reminded of everything the drinking cost.
There is no correct way to mark one. Some people take a chip at a meeting and find the ritual steadying. Some tell nobody and go for a long walk. Some spend the day doing something that would have been impossible a year earlier, which is its own kind of answer.
What tends to matter is naming the time in some way rather than letting it pass unacknowledged. Recovery gives very little day-to-day feedback; a milestone is one of the few moments that says plainly, this worked.
If a date is coming up and you are not sure you want attention on it, decide in advance who you will tell and what you will do. Going in with a plan takes most of the awkwardness out of it.
And if a milestone falls in a hard week, it still counts. The time happened whether or not you felt like celebrating it.
